Canadian Cedric Fofana makes Olympic debut on 3M men’s springboard

Canada’s Cedric Fofana will not advance to the men’s three-meter semi-final at the Tokyo Olympics.

In his Olympic debut, the 17-year-old Montrealer scored 225.35 to place 29th after the prelims at the Tokyo Aquatic Center on Monday.

Chinese Wang Zongyuan and Xie Siyi took a comfortable lead from the start of the competition and never looked back, finishing first and second respectively. Just days ago, the duo won gold together in Tokyo in the three-meter synchronized springboard event.

Zongyuan finished with a total score of 531.30, while Siyi totaled 520.90. The two were the only divers to earn 500 or more points at the event.

Only 18 divers will advance to the semi-finals, where the field will be reduced to the top 12 before advancing to the finals.

Briton Jack Laugher, who won silver at Rio 2016, started strong after his first dive, a 2½ front somersault pike with two twists for 83.30.

But he was sixth with a score of 445.05, his third dive turning out to be the low point of his day with just 56.10 points.
