Mike Woods withdraws from Basque Country cycling race following accident
Canadian rider Michael Woods withdrew from the Itzulia race in the Basque Country on Thursday following a crash near the end of stage three.
Woods’ team, Israel Start-Up Nation, said the 34-year-old Ottawa player had badly bruised left hand and shoulder following Wednesday’s crash.
Woods said he chose to retire to keep his chances of competing in the Ardennes Classics one-day races later this month.
“My hand is quite sore right now. My neck is too,” said Woods. “And I just think it would be a bit risky to keep running and a risk for the Ardennes. But I know that I will be back. I know that I will feel good in a few days and that I will be good for the Ardennes.”
Mike Woods is already looking forward to:
“I will be back soon!”
His Canadian teammate James Piccoli, meanwhile, crashed in a decent quick on Stage 4 on Thursday. The 29-year-old Montrealer suffered a bruised hand and was forced to drop out of the race.
