Rylan Wiens wins bronze medal in men’s 10m platform diving in Olympic test event

Rylan Wiens of Saskatoon reached the podium for the diving medal on Tuesday with a bronze medal on the men’s 10-meter platform at a World Cup event in Tokyo.

The 19-year-old scored 488.55 points in the Olympic test event, with British star Thomas Daley scoring 104.40 for a three-and-a-half somersault and 541.71 points for winning his six routines. Mexican Randal Willars Valdez was second (514.70).

In 2019, Wiens won the 10m tower event by almost 100 points at the elite junior national championships. He was also the senior national champion that year after making his World Series debut in Beijing.

A year earlier, he made his senior international debut at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where Wiens placed sixth in the 10m synchro with Bryden Hattie and among the top eight on tower.

For Daley, Tuesday’s victory was his second at the Tatsumi Aquatic Center after winning the men’s 10m synchro with Matthew Lee.

Nathan Zsombor-Murray finished fifth on the 10m platform Tuesday after a bronze performance on Saturday with fellow Pointe-Claire, Que., Vincent Riendeau.

CBC Sports is live broadcast the Tokyo event. The six-day competition continues Wednesday at 4:45 a.m. ET with the women’s 10m platform semi-finals and final, followed by the men’s 3m springboard semi-final.
